Summer SPF Routine!

Studies have shown that, when it comes to fighting wrinkles, sunscreen is the most potent weapon, more powerful than hyaluronic acid and antioxidants alone. The problem: according to a new survey by the American Academy of Dermatology, only one in seven Americans wear sunscreen daily. Yes, despite its ability to deflect harmful UV rays, the topical shield has a reputation for being oily and unpleasantly fragrant. There are, however, sunscreen-packed products that go against the stereotype. Living in an area so close to the equator it is a necessity that I search for products that contain SPF. After going through bottles and bottles each year, these products have ranked the highest in SPF protection and the all-around consistency on the skin. Let’s begin!

For a full-body sunscreen, I recommend using Kiehl’s new Activated Sun Protector Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50. This sunscreen works great on the face as well because it is oil-free. This paraben-free sun block is non-comedogenic and won’t clog pores; it also has anti-aging goji berry, vitamin E, and einkorn wheat. Now what does this all mean? As you continue to wear it throughout the day it won’t make your skin greasy and slippery. Having an oil-free body sunscreen is good because it won’t promote break-outs on your body, like your chest or back. If you wanted a more tinted sunscreen, adding Australian Gold Tanning Lotion SPF 15 with Bronzer to the sunscreen can create a more golden shimmer. Plus, the smell of them combined is amazing!

Many people have to use two different types of sunscreens for their face and body because their face is so sensitive. If you have sensistive skin, then the Laszlo Blue Firmarine SPF 30 lotion is for you. It has a smell—but it’s the most refreshing, addictive smell ever. Reminiscent of a light sea breeze, I actually enjoy applying it to my face. Which is a good thing, because besides sun protection, it’s also packed with vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. If you don’t want to buy two sunscreens, then I recommend sticking to the product above.

If you are going to the beach and want coverage or just like BB creams, then this is the perfect product for you. Maybelline recently joined the BB cream ranks with its Dream Fresh 8-in-1 Beauty Balm Skin Perfector. The “8-in-1” refers to its benefits—not its ingredients—but that said, the benefits are pretty great. With SPF 30 and no distinguishable scent (score!) the liquid moisturizes and absorbs quickly, leaving skin smoother looking in seconds. This allows you to have a gentle coverage and still be protecting your skin from the harmful rays.

This product would be more of an every day foundation. Almay’s new Wake Up Liquid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 20 refreshes skin with caffeine, cucumber extract, and green tea and provides sheer, medium coverage. Apply this on a primed face with either a foundation brush or a makeup wedge to desired areas. If you are going to be exposed to the sun for an extended period of time, then I suggest wearing a facial sunscreen underneath or mixing it together with the foundation.

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Airbrushing Pressed Powder SPF 30 gives skin a flawless finish and infuses it with loads of anti-aging plant extracts. Apply this with a large powder brush to set a foundation. Physicians Formula is one of my favorite brands for mineral products. They are very inexpensive, yet are filled with natural products and don’t harm your skin. I use this powder daily over my foundation.

Fake a tanned complexion with Lorac’s Tantalizer Baked Matte Satin Bronzer SPF 15. Tip: for a natural look, use a large powder brush to sweep along the perimeter of the face, apples of the cheeks, and nose bridge. If you can’t get a real tan, you can always fake it with this SPF filled bronzer. This is a matte bronzer and creates an even natural look that protects your skin the longer you wear it. For a more contoured look, apply bronzer with an angled blush brush to the cheekbones.

If you prefer loose powder, Philosophy’s The Supernatural Airbrushed Canvas SPF 15 conceals and camouflages like a foundation—and has a travel-friendly pouf applicator and mirrored top. The Philosophy brand can be on the expensive side, but their products do offer to best of the best. So if you want a loose more pricey powder, then this is it. Applying this you wouldn’t need as heavy of a foundation because it covers up so well already.
